Celebrating Arabic Language Day at MWLLO: A Gathering of Voices, Culture, and Connection

by | Dec 10, 2025

The Muslim World League London Office (MWLLO) brought the spirit of World Arabic Language Day to life a little early this year, hosting a warm and lively gathering on Sunday, 7 December 2025. The celebration filled our building with conversation, creativity, and a shared appreciation for one of the world’s most influential languages.

A Day Filled With Insight and Inspiration

The event opened with a warm welcome from our CEO, Muath Alamri, who addressed the audience and shared his reflections on the beauty, depth, and global significance of the Arabic language. He spoke about Arabic’s role in shaping civilisation, connecting communities across continents, and preserving centuries of knowledge, poetry, and faith. His message set a thoughtful and uplifting tone for the day.

The programme brought together an engaging mix of speakers who explored Arabic from diverse cultural and academic perspectives. Revd. Dr. Catriona Laing shared a thoughtful prerecorded message on Arabic’s contribution to interfaith understanding. Farnaz Perry offered a Bahá’í perspective on language as a path to unity. Rick Sopher drew fascinating connections between Arabic and Hebrew, while Yaniv Aknin reflected on Arabic as a bridge between communities.

Interactive sessions added energy throughout the day. Guests tried Arabic calligraphy, picked up conversational phrases, and discovered how many familiar English words trace their origins to Arabic. The atmosphere remained lively, curious, and welcoming.

Honouring Champions of Language and Culture

MWLLO proudly presented the Intercultural Harmony Award to individuals and institutions making a meaningful impact in promoting Arabic language and cultural education across the UK. This year’s honourees included:

  • Arabic Club for Kids – Dr. Rabab Hamiduddin
  • Star Academy (Primary) – Halima Ait Bahou
  • Hampstead School (Secondary) – Fauzia
  • American School in London – Mr. Udai AbuLeaf
  • SOAS Language Centre – Ilham Sulimane
  • Leeds University School of Languages, Cultures and Societies – Dr. Melissa Towler

Young performers also lit up the afternoon. Aban shared a heartfelt poetry recitation, while Isra captivated the room with a beautiful song.

A Special Visit and a Shared Commitment

We were honoured by the presence of the Mayor of Camden, whose support and engagement added meaning to the celebration. His attendance highlighted Camden’s rich multicultural spirit and the importance of creating shared spaces for cultural learning.

As the world prepares to mark December 18, the official UN Arabic Language Day, we reflect on the connections strengthened during this gathering. Since the United Nations recognised Arabic as an official language in 1973, the language has stood as a symbol of heritage, creativity, and global contribution.

At MWLLO, our commitment to promoting multilingualism, cultural understanding, and unity remains strong. Thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make this celebration one to remember.

Stay connected with MWLLO for future events as we continue celebrating the languages, stories, and traditions that bring communities together.
